Mary Yahuz-Pratt

Submitted by Carissa of Mt. Morris

School mount morris Jr. High

My teacher Mrs. Yahuz-Pratt is an awesome teacher and deserves appreciation because she is really caring for the students, staff, and all those around her. Mrs.Y. is a band teacher at Mt. Morris Jr. High. She teaches grades 6th-8th. She also teaches a Jazz Band at the Jr. High and High School.(which I'm in). She is a really good band teacher and is very dedicated. Not only is she a very dedicated teacher, she is a very dedicated mom. When I need help she is willing to take time after school and help me with what i need help with. Mrs. Y. teaches the High school Jazz Band in the morning before high school starts and then she comes over to the Junior high and is ready to teach by 7:30-ish a.m. Mrs. Y. works hard to make sure the kids (including me) have what they need. She also spends a lot of time getting our band concerts and festivals ready. I can't even begin to say or tell how much she cares about everyone. She has been such a help and honor to be in my life and no matter what obstacles get thrown at her she will just toss the obstacles out of her way so she can keep helping me and the other kids. What I have learned by watching her is that always be a friend to others, care for others and help those in need of help. She makes it possible for those with lower incomes to have an instrument to play. She has to deal with a lot of disruptive kids on a daily basis. Money with the school district is tight, but she is able to repair a lot of the instruments which helps the families save on a repair bill. She does so much behind the scenes that I would like to nominate her for Teacher Appreciation Week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This woman is tireless. I'm pretty sure she spends most of her time away from school doing things for her class. She spends a lot of her own money and hardly ever asks for anything from the parents of her students. She also does some really cool projects like making tin can stilts after reading a book that the characters in it had used them. Honestly she is by far the best teacher anyone could ask for. If anyone deserves a gift card for Staples it is her!

SHE LOVES OUR LORD AND LOOKS TO HIM TO GIVE HER DIRECTION AND SHE FOLLOWS THE PATH THAT HE LAYS OUT FOR HER.

IT ALL STARTED WHEN SHE WENT ON A MISSION TRIP TO GUATEMALA AND THEN FOUND THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO AND TEACH. WHEN SHE WENT ON THE NEXT MISSION TRIP SHE STAYED AND THAT WAS HER FIRST YR.

HER WAGES ARE ABOUT 50.00 A MONTH AND SHE THRIVES TO HELP ANYWAY SHE CAN.

I FEEL VERY PROUD OF HER DECISION AND SUPPORT HER 100 PERCENT. THEY SURE COULD USE THE HELP WITH THE CARD SO SHE CAN BUY SUPPLIES FOR YET ANOTHER YEAR OF TOUCHING THE LIVES OF THOSE CHILDREN.

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOUR MINISTRY

School Ida Elementary School

Mrs. Funchion is my daughter Courtney's 3rd Grade teacher. Words can not begin to express how I feel about this wonderful lady. As a parent it breaks your heart when your child is falling behind in school. For the past 3 years Courtney has struggled to stay up with academic requirements for each grade and to be honest Mrs. Funchion was what I believe was God's answer to my prayers. We started this school year like any other but from the beginning I knew something was very different. Courtney was eager to go to school each day and her papers began coming home with satisifactory or above marks. I know I wasn't doing anything different but someone had made a huge impact on Courtney. She had been receiving extra help in reading and math for both 1st & 2nd grade and was still struggling in those subjects. Well much to my surprise Courtney was not even recommended for extra help in math or reading for 3rd Grade! Now, her teacher really had my attention. I began asking Courtney what is was that was making things finally click and she began to tell me about Mrs. Funchion! She explained how she made learning fun. How she did different learning games to master their spelling words each week. She spoke of how she showed her different techniqes for math that turned on the light bulb for Courtney. What was such a struggle in the past became easy. I Thank God for Mrs. Funchion. Her love for children & dedication to learning has made a huge impact on my daughter and many others in her class. If all teachers were like her the world would be a better place. I have never entered anyone for an award before but Mrs. Funchion has forever impacted my daughter and we will never forget her! My prayer is for God's blessings to be upon her always! Forever Grateful

Mrs. Olson is a GREAT teacher. She really loves her job and is good at it. It really seems like she loves the kids. When she is showing them something new she explans it, she show tons and tons of examples. She really trys her best to make math fun. But the kids just don't behave, they lose the notebooks she just freely gives them. They waste her paper. Steal her pens. break her pencils. Lose her folders, AND SHE GETS IT ALL FROM STAPLES. Mrs. Olson is a Great teacher.

Mrs Stevens is a media teacher meaning she has to have eyes in the back of her head or split herself in half. As media teacher she is responsible to teach a lesson for the class in the computer lab as well as watch the class while they are in the library checking out books at the same time. Granted they are next door to each other but she still can't see through a wall. Mrs Stevens is a good christian woman and truely loves kids, you can see it in her face and attitude every day. Even though she only sees each class one time a week she does everything she can to relate to the kids and let them know she cares. I believe by the love and effort she puts forth for these kids everyday that she should win this contest.

My daughter Rebecca had Miss Nadeau as a teacher in 3rd grade, and now she is the assistant dean of the school. I thank God for her. She is a blessing to the children, parents, and the school. She always goes out of her way to reach our kids in any situation that arises.

She knows that Becca is ADD and she always took the extra time that Becca needed and even had great patience with her and her always needing to be moving some way some how.

Now that she is Dean she is still influencing my child. She is a wonderful Christian women who has said when Becca needs someone to come along side of her and lift her up she would be right there for her. I am thankful that she teaches morals to my child and gives correction with the love of God.

Submitted by Dianna of Holt

School Holt Luthern

This is my childrens 2nd year at HLS. We moved our 2 children, Reece age7, and Elleana age 6 to HLS in 2008 after having a difficult time with the Public School system. Both children were in Kathy Jones K/1st/2nd grade for 2008/2009, and Elleana is in her class currently. As a mother I had 3 concerns for school; one that they would be able to learn and grow academically, 2nd that they would not be told they could not talk about their faith, and 3rd and most important that my children would be loved as much as we love them at home for the 6 hours they attended school. Mrs. Jones was able to meet all the concerns that I had. What a blessing it is to not only see your children grow academically and spiritually from school, but to also have a deep love for their teacher. In her brief teaching of my children she has touched not only their hearts, but mine and my husbands as well. It is so amazing to us to see Gods work, a true spirtual gift of teaching touching so many lives daily, including our children. Elleana has been so inspired , that she has stated "I am going to be a teacher just like Mrs. Jones." Our family has been so blessed to have her as our childrens teacher that we could never thank her enough for all that she has done, she has taught them and loved them as if they were her own children, no parent can ask for more than that!

Submitted by Denise of Mt. Pleasant

I would like to nominate Andrea Bowen, because I feel she has gone above and beyond being a great teacher to my son Shane! Shane has had some problems, with reading and writing, and some other issues dealing with self esteem. I love my son Shane more than anything in the world. But I did not recognize some of the things she noticed about Shane. And she has set him up with some extra help. She has called me when she felt he was a little down on himself because his reading was not at the other kids level. Andrea Bowen is teaching 1st grade/2nd grade split for the first year, and I feel she is doing a wonderful job. She is really there for the kids and is willing to give the kids the extra push that they need to go in the right direction. Andrea Bowen thank you for truly being there for my son and giving him all the extra help that he has needed. You get a hug and a Smile from me!

She is a true hero in my opinion. Mrs. Jacobson has diabetes, and even though going on all the trips to state meeting and national meeting to help her students get recognized, and to help her have a great time, it really takes a toll on her health. She is a amazing women because she keeps pushing on to do what ever she can for these kids. The Pickford FCCLA Chapter is truly honored to call her our chapter adviser, she has made a difference in all of our lives. We believe Mrs.Jacobson should win this award because she will do anything for anyone, she is the caring fun loving person in this world. Marcia Hamstra

School St. Gerard Catholic School

Mrs. Hamstra is an outstanding educator. She teaches 3rd grade at St. Gerard. Her enthusiasm for learing, gentle spirit and unending patience make her an integral part of our school. Marcia always encourages students to try their best and is genuinely interested in the "whole" student. She is quick to praise her students in any area in which they excel; from reading to art to music to participating in Mass. Our child was struggling in math and Marcia noticed that her self esteem was wavering. She took our child aside and told her that Father John wanted the strongest 3rd grade readers to participate in Mass. Marcia told our child that she was one of the strongest readers and hoped she would volunteer for a Mass part. Our child grinned from ear to ear knowing that Mrs. Hamstra had faith in her abilities. Marcia's smile makes everyone feel right at ease. We are so blest to have her on staff at our children's school.

Mrs. Kruch is an amazing teacher. She taught Spanish when I was in school a while back, but she made a big impact on me and we still keep in touch. She was positive in every aspect of the class, and she encouraged her students to be the best that they could be in everything they did.

I wasn't a big Spanish student, but enjoyed her class because she made it fun and exciting to learn. Even today, over 30 years later, she is still in contact with her students, encouraging them and giving examples of what you should do and be as an adult. Thank you, Mrs. Kruch - you are the kind of person I want to be when I grow up!! :-)

I have known Cindy for about two years and she is truly phenominal. Cindy teaches special needs children, is a Special Olympics director who organizes teams and also coaches a couple of teams, and is a Girl Scout. She is the treasurer for the Mason Girl Scout Service Area.

Besides all of her community activities, Cindy is also active in her church. She belongs to several stamping/card clubs and is always willing to share ideas and her time.

Cindy is perpetually happy, an attribute that can only be a result of her relationship with the Lord. She gives herself completely and I would like to see a small token given back to her.

Cindy Hyaduck is truly a shining example of Christ's love.

I have always been very proud of my daughter Jacki. She is a wonderful person with a good heart for children. She is very dedicated as a teacher and has a heart for each of her students. She has been a teacher for over ten years with the Flint School System. I hope you would consider her for this honor. Thank you

Submitted by Tricia of Burton
Jacki Holleman is my sister....she has been working for the Flint Schools for many years as an elementary teacher. To say she is an amazing teacher would not be saying enough. Since she was a very young girl she new she wanted to be a teacher, she has always loved children. She tried for many years to have her own children, finally after 7 years she found out the wonderful news that she was expecting only to be devasted weeks later when she miscarried. But, God blessed her months later with another preganancy and she now has 2 children.....through all of the personal trials of her own life she has never given up on loving the children that enter the door way of her classroom. She has taught many kids that come from some really tough back grounds. Broken homes, parents in prison, or worse yet, dead. Many of her students are being raised by other extended family members. Some of the stories she has shared over the years that her students have gone through really break you heart, so I can only imagine how she has felt when she sees these things on a daily basis. But, through it all, she has remained an awesome teacher. She has not lost her ability to love her students and be a great role model as well. To say she deserves to be honored is putting it mildly. I sincerely hope you consider her for this priveledge

She spends many long nights and early mornings preparing exciting lessons for her other family-130 students a day. About a year ago our family was introduced to Smile FM and it has been a very positive aspect in our life. Lori is dedicated to teaching and making differences in her students life. She is also her school juinor class advisor and helps prepare different parades, events and the Junior / Senior prom.
I would like to nominate my wife Lori for being positive and a great teacher, wife and mother to our two young boys. We love you.

Lori Bell

Submitted by Jill of Negaunee

School Lakeview Elementary School

My best friend, Kathy Coonen, died one month ago of a very sudden and massive heart attack. She had just turned 40. She left behind her husband of almost 18 years and 14 year old son Alex, 12 year old son Joshua, and 9 year old daughter Molly. Molly's teacher, Mrs. Lori Bell, is who I would like to nominate as teacher of the year.

When Kathy died on Friday, March 26, I contacted some of the school teachers to please pass the word. By that night when we made it back to the family's home, Molly's teacher called. She was absolutely devastated by the news and wanted to talk to Molly to tell her how sorry she was. She told her she would be there for her, whatever she needed. She gave Molly and myself her home number and cell phone number and told Molly to call her whenever she needed.

The kids decided not to go to school that week. Mrs. Bell called another time that weekend and then again a couple times through the week that the kids stayed home. I spoke to her a couple times and she expressed her condolences to the whole family and wanted to make sure we all knew she would do anything she could to help them out.

When the family decided it was time for the kids to go back to school, Mrs. Bell had already spoke to the class and prepared them for Molly returning. She was such a support to Molly. Molly knew she was someone she could trust with her feelings and so she felt safe with her and in going back to school.

I believe Mrs. Bell went out of her way to care for one of her students and still does, as Molly, her family, and even myself are still greatly grieving Kathy's death. I believe she went above and beyond a teacher's role as she extended her hand to Molly and Molly's family in this time of great devastation. And when Molly returned to school, she made sure the other students and faculty were ready to be by Molly's side through the laughter and tears of remembering her mother.

I hope you will consider awarding Mrs. Lori Bell as a special teacher!

Mrs. Vicki Bocek

Submitted by Karen of Midland

School Durand High School

Mrs. Bocek is a special education teacher. I had the privilege of being in her class when she taught at Merrill High School. I had moved it to the district when I was in 8th grade (1978-79 school year.) I am dyslexic. After being in Merrill for one semester they put me in her class. I was held back that year. The next year I wasn't put in her class. I don't remember why. But the following year is when this teacher made the biggest inpact on me. I started dating that year. I began to be ashamed that I was put in her class.. even though she was a great teacher. It was what others might think cause I was in her class. She notice that I was acting different she pulled me aside and asked a few questions.. on being was having problems with being in her class. I shared how I felt. She told me that if those friends couldn't except me for who I was. Then they weren't much of a friend. Those words I still hear today. I stayed in her class until I graduated in 1984. In other years before I graduated, I was having issues at home. She was always willing to listen and let me cry on her sholder, if I needed to. One year I was a teachers aid for her. During this year I learned alot about myself. She always gave me incourgement. She would tell me that she knew if I put my mind to it I would over come my disablities. Never did she ever tell anyone they couldn't do something do to their disabilites. Due to her encougement to many, one of my classmates is know a Minister. I went on to take some college, but never finish..not because I don't think I couldn't do it.. but because of family. I chose to have a family instead of forfilling my dream of helping out in a special education area. I fell that someday I will go back to school and do this.. but it would be because of what Mrs. Bocek has given to her students.
I relieze that this isn't a current teach/student relationship, but I feel that it is a good example of a teacher that goes unreconigize for her relationships she builds with her student. She is no longer at Merrill school, she is teaching closer to her family in Durand. But to this day, I still keep in contact with her, I feel that she has been a big part of my life in the 5 years I had her as a teacher. I want to keep her as part of my life not that I am no longer her student.

I would just like to say to her, Thank you for all the things that you have done that has gone unnoticed.

Anita Riebolt

Submitted by Jennifer of Negaunee

School Redeemer Lutheran Preschool

I would like to nominate Anita Riebolt, my daughter's preschool teacher, for the teacher appreciation contest. In addition to Anita being a warm, loving teacher who guides and supports the youngsters in their civil and academic success, she also has the awesome privilege of, in many cases, introducing Jesus to children who may otherwise never know him. Through bible stories, songs, discussions, arts and crafts and presentations, Anita teaches the children about God's love and the precious gift of salvation. Research shows that 32% of children are saved between the ages of 5-14, and of the unsaved, only 10% will receive Christ later in life. As you can see, Anita has such an influential task at hand by laying an impressionable faith based foundation that can change a youngsters life eternally. Just think of how many lives Anita will change in her lifetime and what a ripple effect that will have. In my mind, Anita is on a missionary job from God, and although she is very deserving of this teacher appreciation award, who true reward can not be seen on each.

Stephen Smith

Submitted by Sarah of Marquette

School Hancock Central High

My family was "broken." We had learned to just get by in our poverty and despair. We had settled into the idea that we were broken individuals who would never succeed in life, in love, in academics. We were broken.

Stephen Smith didn't accept that. Not for me. Not for my brother. Not for any student. He believed in his students, believed in finding their strengths and pushing them to grow in those talents. He gave us the tools we needed to succeed--not only information and material, but confidence, critical thinking skills, humor, humility, and the freedom to dream enormous dreams. He didn't allow us to slip through the cracks. He proved over and over again that he was committed to doing anything in his power to see his students succeed. I don't think he could have loved us more if we were his own children. To a "broken" home kid, that was the commitment I needed.

My brother didn't see it this way. He remember Smith as a hard, unreasonable fellow who made high school miserable--always challenging him, telling him to work harder, saying he was capable of more. It wasn't until several years later that my brother realized Smith pushed him because he believed in him. This revelation made the difference. It gave him the determination to finish college and become a teacher, as well. When asked why he wanted to teach, my brother answered that he didn't want to change the whole world. If he could change the world for one student, as Stephen Smith had done for him, then he would count himself a success.

Even the smallest stone can cause a ripple that will change many lives.

This teacher has dedicated over 25 years to the vocation of teaching. She is an Angel here on earth! I have six children and am nominating Mrs. Clement because she deserves every teaching award or small gift she can get! Working at a small private school in an area that has been in a depression since logging and mining have left the UP, she takes home a pay check that is half that of a public school teacher. She does this for the love of children and the love of God. She brings God's love with her everyday and shares it with all her kids. Beyond that every year her class does numerous service learning projects; baskets for the area needy, tsunami relief, Haiti earthquake relief, and shut-in care gifts just to name a few. Her motto is that her classroom is a "risk-taking, mistake making" room. She goes the extra mile, she makes a difference, she loves, she prays, she sets by example, she is an Angel! And we are so very blessed to have her at Father Marquette School!

Submitted by Andrea of Flint

School Baker College of Flint

After a 28 year career in finance, I lost my job in 2008, like many others in Michigan. I found myself trying to find a job in today's employment marketplace - without a degree. I had 34 credits toward a degree that I earned in my early years, but I knew that in order to obtain a good job again at my age, I would need a degree. I decided to attend Baker College, and picked up where I left off with my Business Management degree. I had several business classes with Frank Dumas as the instructor. He is a very inspirational, real life experienced, down to earth, apply what you learn, teacher. He was in the military, then worked 30 plus years in a human resources job, and now uses that experience teaching at Baker. His teaching methods are PERFECT for the adult needing to go back to school. He makes learning fun, his humor and sense of true caring about the students success eminates from him during his class. He really wants you to succeed. His classes gave me the confidence to know, that i COULD finish my degree, that I COULD go farther than my original goal, that i COULD participate in class being a 50 year old mom and not fear being laughed at, that i COULD be on the Deans List, that I would LIKE learning. I learned from him that I have what it takes to succeed. Frank Dumas did that for me. He is an excellent teacher.

Ms. Morrice has been a wonderful teacher! She teaches 2nd grade and my son Ethan is in her class. My son needed a one on one aid, but had been doing so well this year, he does not need an aid anymore. And a large part of that is because of the care and concern Ms.Morrice has given Ethan. She does a great job teaching the kids and is always in a good mood and has a smile to share. I wish all teachers were as great as she is! What a blessing to have such a great teacher for my son!

I am writing this because I feel that my son Morgan's Teacher should be recognized for all the help she has given my son and other children. Mrs. Maki is a special Education Teacher my son has been seeing here many years. Mrs. Maki is the type of teacher all teachers should be. When I was told my son had a learning disability Mrs. Maki was there for him and for me she has taught him so much. He has a difficult time reading and writing his memory is not the best but she has found ways for him to learn and retain the information that she is teaching him. Mrs. Maki makes learning fun for my son. Truely if it were not for her I dont think that my son would love school or be doing so well. I honestly dont know what my son Morgan and I would have done with out her. I know that when he goes to the Middle School next year that he will truely miss her he LOVES her and can talk to her. I hate for him to lose that but like all things they come and go we just have to hope and pray that the next person will be as kind, careing and loveing as she is. The children that she helps and works with are truely lucky and I am so greatful that she was a part of my sons life and academic career. I know that he has learned alot from her and I myself am very thankful for all she has done for him. So thank you to Mrs. Maki for being a great teacher.

The 1st day that I volunteered in the classroom, 1 of the little boys in the class said "Oh my G..." Mrs. Priess got down to his level and said "Honey, we don't say God's name unless we are praying or reading the Bible." I was SHOCKED. We are in a public school and she is telling him not to say the Lord's name in vein.

Mrs. Priess has taken a class of kindergarteners, who could barely right their own name and made them into boys and girls who love to read, write and do math! She has brought out the confidence in my son that I didn't even know was there.

I feel so blessed to have her as my sons teacher and I can only pray that she will still be there when my next son starts kindergarten.

School St. Therese Preschool

Mrs. Sullivan has been a wonderful teacher for my intense son, Sean. Sean is not shy, but takes a little while to warm up to people. Mrs. Sullivan keyed into Sean and that he was not sure of his new environment. When others would have not taken it seriously, she took time out of her personal time to spend with Sean and to make sure he transitions well. Many times she took her lunch hour to spend with Sean to make sure he was comfortable. She would stay after school to make sure he transitioned to aftercare well.
Mrs. Sullivan is a very caring teacher. She looks at each of her students as a blessing to her and thanks the parents for the privilege of teaching their children.

Mrs. Sullivan has touch Sean and helped him grow tremendously this year. She has touch our family and makes a difference in many families.

Sarah Racine is my grandaughter's Kindergarten teacher. I have been to school parties for my grandaughter. Sarah interacts so well with the children. She was dressed up as a witch for Halloween. They sing songs and she always has crafts for them to do at all their parties. The children are so well mannered in her classroom. You can tell the children all love her by the way they treat her. She always has games they play at the parties. You can tell how much she loves each child. We need good teachers who care about their students and give them a good start in the school system.

Submitted by Garrett of Bath

School Washington Elementary Owosso

When I was in first grade I was struggling to read. I understood everything that I was reading, but all of the letters would jump around and after a few minutes of reading I would get tired and struggle more. I happen to have this same teacher in the second grade and of course I was still struggling to read. I was only reading 33 wpm when I started that year. My teacher, Mrs. Collison had been to a conference on Visual Perception Disorders and told my mom about it. My mom took me to the eye doctor and that is what I had. I easily skip a line when reading, it looks like I have dsylexia because sometimes I will write or I used to read my letters backwards. The eye doctor gave me a CD to do that would hopefully improve my vision. Well, within two months of doing this vision therapy I jumped up to 90 wpm! I had alread hit benchmark for a second grader and it was only January. By the end of the year I was reading 120 wpm. Mrs. Collison also believed in me and had me tested for the gifted class, in which I qualified to be in. The only area that I did not qualify in was the reading, but I still got in. I have had the privilege of having Mrs. Collison for the last three years and she has helped me everything. I will be forever grateful to her.

Mr. Roger Farris has been teaching at New Lothrop HIgh School for over 30 years. I know it's been that long because my mom had him too and he is just as great a teacher now as he was then. Mr. Farris is a very smart man. He teaches all of the really hard classes like Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Math and Calculus. These are serious subjects but he is still able to make the classes interesting and fun. Such as when he dresses up like a nerd and brings his pet mole (puppet) to class.
Mr. Farris also shares his knowledge by teaching classes at a area college. He is a very busy man. Additionally, Mr. Farris is very involved in activities that challenge and reward students. He is the head of the Honor Society and he spends lots of time with the Quiz Bowl team. He always has the students best interest in mind and is there to be sure we succeed.

I have been in the nursing program now for 2 years, Dr. Sanders has been the only teacher who has taken the initiative to make sure his students ARE learning. He has been one of the fairest teachers I have known. At any time during class, if you didn't understand something, he would never make you feel like an idiot, he would explain until he knew you understood totally. He has many degrees besides teaching and was not unusual for him to share many of his lifes experiences with us in a teaching manner. If students failed, it was not because he didn't try, it was because they wanted to. He was always available for tutoring or questions if needed. What a wonderful man and great asset to Davenport University.

I love having her for a teacher and hope others will enjoy it as much as me. I am not the only person she has helped. She helps everyone that needs it. I want to win this gift certificate for her to help show her how much everything she has did for me matters. It would be a small stepping stone towards what she really deserves. She is a wonderful, caring, and giving person. She deserves to get the gift certificate.

I am a 17 yr old senior at martin high school in martin michigan. My parents split up late last dec,. due to my dads domestic violence towards my mom and my sister and I. It has been the toughest year of my life, and I have recently moved in with my mom, who helps me so much and shares with me that God's denial, is only God's protection.
While I have never had a teacher that I didn't like, I have found one this year that I absolutely love, Mrs. Holly Cravino.
She is my current high school guideance councilor. I don't know what I would do with out her in my life right now. She was my mom, when my mom couldn't be there for me, gives me encouragement and support for my future, and has shown me so much streghth and hope.
I think anyone could teach a certain subject like math, science..etc.. but it takes a real person to teach and guide, like Jesus did, the basics and necessities in life. The meaning of life.
I believe that there are only two footprints in the sand right now, and Jesus is carriing me. But, he also gave me a gift that I cannot repay, Holly.

My wife, Sandy, helps fourth grade elementary school students to become learners. She's not just satisfied with just teaching children she wants them to become lifelong learners. I am always impressed by her dedication to making sure each child receives the individual attention needed to make he or she become a strong learner. Her Christ-likeness is seen in the way she loves and prays for her students. It seems that wherever we go in Haslett we bump into current or former students and parents. Each time I'm amazed at how they greet her with a smile and most often a hug--no matter how old the former students are. This year her "first" fourth grade class will be graduating from Haslett High School. I remember the last National Honor Society induction ceremony we attended together. We counted 21 of her 27 students from her first fourth grade class were being inducted into NHS. Now, that's results and a lot of tough love. I recall overhearing one of the parents thanking her for the role Sandy played in steering this particular young lady onto the right path. It was heartwarming for me to stand back and watch my wife just glow from Christ's radiance. I'm so proud of her.

We team up with a third grade class to do reading and writing. He teachs science. We do not have rules instead we have conventions they are Best Effort, Encougement, Respect. I think he is the best. We also do have a contest at the end of the day called -The Unicorn- and the class votes to see who have been good the whole day will get it. There are seven tables and the table who has the most votes win if the teacher thinks it is a table that should get it. We also do a thing, if we do not follow the conventions then they get a mark for the one they did not follow. If you have three marks by the end of the week then they get a blue note. They have to take it home to show there parents and they have to get it signed by Monday or they have to stay in their recess's until they get it signed. MY TEACHER ROCKS!!!!!!!!! Ms Alice is my mother. She has been teaching Sunday School for over 20 years. In fact, at 77 years old, she is still teaching the middlers. This is a very difficult class to teach and to be teaching at 77 years old when she could be enjoying her retirement is quite a sacrifice. Every holiday, Ms. Alice makes sure that every child goes home with a special little present. The kids that come through Ms. Alice's class have the Ten Commandments memorized along with the books of the Bible and the 23rd Psalm. She does so many nice things for the kids. There was a child whose Dad had to go to jail for 90 days. Ms. Alice kept in contact with the dad. I know this because I saw a "thank you" note on her kitchen table from this man whose wife moved away and left him with the three kids. Another example, one of Ms. Alice's kids had a brain tumor. Ms. Alice kept in constant contact with the child. She sent her gifts, cards and most of all, her fervent prayers. Ms. Alice deserves this special honor. Ms. Alice buys all of her own classroom supplies due to the class not being able to afford supplies. Therefore, Ms. Alice could also benefit from this honor. Please find her years of dedication and sacrifices worthy of the Appreciation Award. Thank you very much.

Mrs. Frame

Submitted by Julie of DeWitt

School Herbison Woods

My son has an Autistic Disorder called Aspbergers Syndrome. The first few years of his education were very frustrating partially because no one really knew how to teach him in the area of reading. While the last few years have been getting better, this year he made tremendous strides, he moved from the non-reader part of the spectrum to having the world of reading opened up for him. He is excited about being able to read, I attribute his progress to a team of good teachers this year and within that team one especially caring and knowledgable teacher, Mrs. Frame. Several years ago she was one of the first people to point out or "classify" what my sons "diagnosis" really should be. We were lucky enough to actually get her as his special services teacher this year. She has experience with teaching children with Aspergers in the past and it really shows in her ability to bring out the best in my son. It has felt like she was an answer to my prayers. My wish is that every other child with Aspbergers syndrome finds an advocate just like Mrs. Frame to bring out the best in them. She works very hard, gives of her own time and is very deserving of a little extra.

Ms. Nystrom has been so amazing with my 11 year old this year! 5th grade can be so trying and coupled with the fact that my daughter is a bit "high anxiety" Shea has been so very patient and encouraging.

In the fall of last year my daughter had her life take a turn and Shea was the absolute best thing that could have happened to her! She handled the situation with grace, support and encouragement and God knew this where Bronsyn needed to be! Ms. Nystrom has been a blessing to us this year and I am so thankful that she has played such an important part in Bronsyn's life! I am nominating my husband, not because he is my husband but because I am amazed on how his students really take to him. Jason is a public school teacher and it amazes me that he is so open to the students on his faith. I have heard many stories of how teachers can't talk about that stuff in school, but the students have always brought up the subject with my husband. I have watched my husband grow stronger in his faith through out the years and to hear stories of kids talking to him about it really amazes me. My husband works at a small school and was only given $100 for this yrs supplies, even though he is the main science teacher, that teaches 6 different courses. I am so proud of my husband for being a great teacher, great husband, great father and most of all for being able to stand up for his faith.

Judy Person (Pearson)

Submitted by Suzanne of DeWitt

School Lansing Christian School

Mrs. Person is a true angel. She has blessed our family so much by loving and caring so much for our son, Jack, in her kindergarten class. She is the best teacher we have ever encountered. She prays for her students regularly, individually, asking the Lord to bless each and every one of them and strengthening their gifts. She encourages her students to be kind and thoughtful, and most importantly to walk in the Lord's shoes each day. Mrs. Person is such a patient person. She has worked thoughtfully with Jack, understanding him and his needs (he has sensory integration issues), and loving him all the way through. She has helped build his self-esteem, has loved him unconditionally, taught him with her whole heart. We have been so very blessed to have her with Jack in kindergarten both last year and this year.

She approached us mid-year last year to tell us she recommended we keep Jack in another year of kindergarten to allow him to "grow." We fought it at first, but really prayed on her suggestion to determine what was best for Jackie. We are so glad we allowed him another year with Mrs. Person! She sees beautiful characteristics in our child that are sometimes easy to "lose" as a parent. She has continued to encourage us, as parents, to work with Jack in certain ways in order to really bring out his God-given gifts. He is such a blessing, and His gifts have shone so much brighter because of his precious time with Mrs. Person! She is truly a remarkable lady!

We feel so blessed to be able to have her another year for our son Alex next year. What a great gift that will be, too!

Submitted by Lora of Dimondale

Mr. Larsen was my daughters 3rd grade teacher. He is a teacher that looks out for each child and wants them to succeed in all areas.. He comes to school daily prepared, smiling and ready to teach. He encourages each child to do their best and helps them to focus on their strengths.
My daughter( as well as a few others) needed some extra help with reading, twice a week he stayed after school with the children. He spent his own time with these children for over 6 weeks and my daughters reading and confidence in reading improved greatly. He never asked for anything in return.
I remember when my daughter was in 1st grade and she wasn't catching on to the way her teacher was trying to teach a unit in math, her teacher went to Mr. Larsen asking for some suggestions, he went and spent his planning time to help my daughter (who was not in his class). He showed her a few times and made sure she had it before sending her back. Again this just shows how he looks out for everyone. He could of said "Oh well, it's your problem not mine, I have my own children to look after."
My daughter is at a new school and really misses Mr. Larsen. She thanks God nightly for the things he has given her and many nights asks him if she can be blessed with another teacher who has patience, fun, and encouragement like Mr Larsen.
Thank you Lord for the impact that he has had in my child's life and for the many more lives to come.
Your Awesome Mr. Larsen!!!

School Northern Michigan Christian School

After 2 years of being out of work, God worked a miracle in our lives and blessed my husband with a great job. However, the job is almost 3 hours away, so he's gone during the week and only home from Friday night to Sunday night.

Our oldest daughter, Hannah is 7 and in 2nd grade. She took this very hard and we saw it coming out in her school work. Her grades started dropping and it was a constant battle to keep her encouraged and excited. Up to that point, she did great in school. On top of that, she was having trouble with another student giving her trouble.

Here's where Mrs. Koetje comes in. She immediately, took action and helped put an end to the issue with the other student. Not only did she talk with Hannah, but also the other student. Today, Hannah and this student are great friends. Mrs. Koetje is responsible for that.

As for the struggles Hannah was having with Daddy being gone all week, she was such an encouragement to Hannah. She took the time to call me or talk to me at the school. She also made it a point to ask Hannah, daily, how things were going. Hannah's well-being and success as a 2nd grader was important to her. Above all else, Hannah's relationship with God is top priority, as it is with all of Mrs. Koetje's students.

It took a few months, but because of Mrs. Koetje's dedication and love for her students, Hannah is now back on track and doing great.

Mrs. Koetje takes the time to get to know her students and their families. It's not just a job, but a passion. Her love and commitment to Christ-centered education is unmatchable. I can't imagine where Hannah would be now if it weren't for all the time and love Mrs. Koetje gave. I look forward to our 3 other children having her in the future.

Jackie Long teaches 4th grade at Harvey Swanson Elementary in Ortonville. Last year, just before school started my husband was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. The first couple of weeks of school were very hectic with doctor appointments and surgery. In the midst of my husband's surgery, I completely forgot to arrange for a "special person" to come to school on Special Persons Day for my son Nolan. Everyone else in the classroom had a "special person". Jackie Long figured I must have inadvertently forgotten with everything else going on. She totally stepped up to be Nolan's special person that day and do special things with him in the classroom so he did not feel left out. She also made herself available if we needed to drop Nolan off to school early to get to the hospital, etc. She is a true blessing.

Colleen Rumer

Sumbitted by Rachelle of Imlay City

School Imlay City High School

April 15th, 2009, the worst day of my life. I walked through the hallways at school knowing that my best friend died that morning. My eyes were red, puffy, and raining, and school was the last place I wanted to be. Having all my other peers and teachers ignore my pain and tears, hurt. Badly. But when I went to my 3rd hour biology class, that all changed. Walking my way up from the stairs from doing a pointless fire-drill, Ms. Rumer pulled me aside, and asked why I was crying. I told her about the death of my best friend Jessika, and she grabbed me in her arms, holding me in her gentle embrace. I told her about her car accident, and spending my whole spring break in the hospital with her. She sat with me, and talked to me about heaven, and motivated me to keep trying in life, when I just wanted to give up the most. She told me to come see her if I ever needed anything, and that was the kindest move anyone could have made at the time. I had nobody, I was lost in this black abyss called life, and the only one there for me was Ms. Rumer.
The next week, we had a lady come in to talk about HIV/AIDS, which she said was the number one killer of teens, which lead into the number two reason why most teens die each year; Car accidents. I thought I could make it through the lecture, but when the lady said that she worked at a hospital near by and said she had a young girl, 14, named Jessika Marie Bannon, that had just passed last week due to severe brain swelling, I bolted out of the room. I went to the bathroom, crying my eyes out the whole way there. One of my friends were sent out to help me, then of course, I was visited by Ms.Rumer, who then helped me with my pain, and got me through it, then we went back to class, and everything was okay. To be 100% honest, without Ms.Rumer being there for me at that critical time in my life, who knows if I'd even be here today.
Later on that year, Ms.Rumer was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was often absent from school, and no one knew what was going on. When I found out the news I cried. She was about to explain to the class why she has been gone, and before she could, I made sure that I told her I loved her. When she responded with " I love you too", suddenly all my worries vanished. The calmness in her voice told me that everything would be ok. She then proceeded to tell us that she had been cured of her cancer, and we were all ecstatic, giving her hugs and telling her how strong she was.
Now, Ms.Rumer is a very active member in the Relay For Life Cancer society. She volunteers every year and is extremely involved, and motivates other teens in our school to get involved too.
Ms.Rumer may not know how she has changed my life, but she has, and she's been the most influential person on me, thus far in this journey of life.

Chris is the ideal kindergarten teacher. I had the pleasure of getting to know her as a teacher last year while my youngest son was in her class. She allowed me access to my son during the year and welcomed me into the classroom to help. I had a chance to get to know all the kids and to watch an amazing teacher with an incredible gift. Not many parents get a day to day, hands on, view of what a teacher goes through.

Last year happened to be the first year of the district's new policy (bad policy but that is another story) of all day kindergarten. Chris had children from age four to nearly seven. Some whom had been in day care their whole life to some whom had never spent a day away from their parents. Not to mention the different academic levels!

Chris has a gift, she was able to run a very controlled classroom while teaching AND most importantly making every child feel important and loved. It is clear that a teacher is special when children from all grade levels want to come back to her classroom each day to say hi.

I have been and am now a "homeschool mom". I felt led by God to put my youngest sons in public school last year and I learned quickly why. I truly believe Chris Kline, as a teacher and a friend, was God's gift to my son and to me. She is what teaching should be all about.

My son is no angel. He actually has been pretty difficult for teachers historically. He has hated school since the day he walked in to Kindergarten. This year he has Ms. Shepler and she is always so positive and encouraging with him there has been a huge difference in his attitude towards school. He enjoys going to schools and is doing better scholastically than he ever has.

Communication with teachers in the past has been frustrating because there is either none at all or it only comes when things have come to a head after months of issues. Ms. Shepler keeps in constant contact with me which helps to stop issues before they even happen. She is always available by e-mail or phone and ready to help in any way she can.

She is so kind and loving to him and has some great classroom management tools that help him to remember how he needs to behave. She uses paper money that the kids can earn to buy things ot of their little class "store" she has asked for donations of small items for their store but I am pretty positive she still has to purchase extra things for it. It would be great if she could use this to add more school supplies to her "store". School Cass City Middle School

Mr. Stern is an awesome teacher. He makes learning fun and will include real life experiences within his teaching. He is a positive teacher with his Christian beliefs shining through. He will not allow any bullying or criticizing in the classroom. If he sees a student struggling, he will take the time to make sure the student understands the subject. Besides teaching, he also is the 8th grade basketball coach and the Varsity softball coach at Cass City. On the weekends, he teaches Sunday School for our church. You can see that he is committed to the kids and is doing his best to raise the standards. The other thing about Mr. Stern is that he loves his "Sparty's". This could be a drawback for the Michigan fans.

When my son first started at Da VInci, he was really behind in school. i didnt no what to do with him, he just didnt learn anything. i was so frustrated so i sent him to DaVinci and when i did wow the turn around was amazing. His teacher ms shelby learned a lot about him as a person and she worked really well with him with his ADHD. she no matter what would say its not his fault, he cant control it and with that she did everything she could do to make him a better student and have more slef esteem then what he did when he first started there. she showed him love that i have never seen any other teacher show students. YOu can really tell that ms shelby loves her job and her students. ms shelby i no had a hard time with my child however she did everything she could to make his educational experience the best she could. i am so greatful for ms shelby. she taught my son how to read and how to control himself and just basically everything he needed to know to be successful in school. She is a very impressive teacher and i think she deserves all the award the world has to offer, she is amazing.my son thomas still to this day hugs her everytime he sees her and tells me how much he loves her. i hope you will consider ms shelby for this award. she really deserves it.

Sarah Winter

Submitted by Paula of Alpena

School Besser

Mrs. Winter has had two of my children in her class and my son is a diffcult child and she worked so hard to help him through the year. She never gave up on him. she would make sure he had all his home work in his back pack, she would write me notes to let me know what he had for homework each day. It took alot of extra time for her to do this for my son. But she never gave up.
My son got into alot of trouble and she work so hard to teach him that he needed to think before he reacted to things that happened. She put him on a three strikes you are out and she followed through; which is what my son needed. Although all the teachers at Besser worked hard with my son and were very good I feel that Mrs. Winter had the most postive impact on him. This would mean so much to me if she won this; knowing Mrs. Winter like I do, she would spend the money on things for the class.

Madame Carl (Mrs. K. Carl)

Submitted by Cindy of North Branch

School North Branch High School

I have 3 children, my oldest graduated from North Branch High School last year. With that in mind, I feel that my experience with educators in our school district has been long and for the most part enjoyable. Although, one teacher stands out far above the rest to me because of the respect, excitement, interest, encouragement and enthusiasm she brings to the classroom.
You have to understand why I say this because most teachers don’t seem to be happy these days, truly happy!
When my 2nd child was in 9th grade he mentioned many times how much he liked Madame Carl his French teacher. This was the beginning of his French classes. He loved going to class. “She’s so cool, she’s awesome” Jake said. In her classes she implemented French food day, and my son wanted to learn how to make crepes. This was not typical; my son never wanted to cook or learn to cook. After French I A, French I B, French II A, French II B, he is now in his last trimester of his sophomore year and does not have her French class but was still happy to have her as his English teacher for the required credit. “That’s okay; I still have a class with her”. You don’t hear this too often about a teacher these days.

During last fall’s parent teacher conferences, I just had to meet her. This was my first meeting in the high school. I didn’t know many teachers, due to my job in the prior years and scheduling conferences. While I waited my turn, I observed all the teachers in the conference room (aka lunch room) while they met with parents. One stood out the most! She was energetic and enthused to see each parent that sat down to talk to her. She was positive and encouraging, informative, and thankful that parents attended. After sitting there for a while I put it all together, it was her, Madame Carl! I thought “my kid was right, she is awesome”. Now my turn was up and our introduction was, well lets just say GREAT. I felt like I knew her for years and at this point she didn’t even know who’s mom I was. She put it together when I said my last name. She had awesome comments about both my sons. She said “I just love Jake. I would take him home to be mine”. Wow, I thought, a teacher that loves teenagers! She thanked me for doing a great job! Had many more positive things to say and just truly seemed HAPPY.

Later that night; during family conversation, including my oldest, he even replied how much he likes Madame Carl. “Everyone loves her, he said”. My question was why? Both my son’s told me “she’s fun, she doesn’t talk down to us”. I said, she talks to you with respect? They both replied “yeah, most teachers don’t”. Our conversation continued about how “awesome” she was and I found out that even while she was teaching my kids at the high school these past 5 years, she was dealing with her own child’s undiagnosed illness. Just this last summer, Doctors diagnosed her son with autism.

Even when she had things to deal with, she brought so much to her classroom and continues too.

I don’t know if she shares the faith in our Lord and Savior, but I would guess she does. You know the quote? What’s in your heart shows all over you! It shows all over her!
